Cece Bell, author of the book El Deafo was a hearing child, until that is she suffered from meningitis at the age of 4.5 years. Her parents got her a hearing aid called the phonic ear to help her hear. Cece recounts her challenges to integrate herself back to school and move ahead. 

The characters in the story have bunny ears! This according to the author signify excellent hearing.

El Deafo is the code name Bell gave herself. The story is told with no rancor or bitterness but details her journey in finding new friends and understanding those around her and becoming comfortable in who she is as a person. We laugh with Cece, and empathise with the child she was and rejoice in the author she has become.
