Patricia MacLachlan and Hadley Hooper have collaborated on a picture book about the great French impressionist artist Henri Matisse. He had a long and illustrious career painting and later in creating his famous decoupages or paper collages.
It all started though for him as a little boy who watched as his mother painted porcelain plates and saw the colourful carpets woven in his town came to life. This was in stark contrast to the cold northern French town he lived in.
His lessons in understanding light started when he watched sunlight bouncing off the iridescent feathers of pigeons stayed with him for life. He became one of the foremost artists who captured light beautifully in his paintings.
